BUILDING PROSPERITY FOR WOMEN IN
POVERTY

Women’s Empowerment International
Holds Annual Celebration

Women’s Empowerment International (WE) will hold
its annual celebration on July 13 from 2 to 4 PM. The theme of this year’s
celebration and fundraiser is “Building Prosperity for Women in
Poverty.” The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. Registration
is online at www.womenempowerment.org or 619-333-0026.

Held at UCSD Great Hall, at North Torrey Pines Rd. and Pangea
Drive, the
event includes presentations by San
Diego women who are leaving poverty behind; a report on recent site
visit to WE's Ghana project, and news about WE's ambitious
next steps to reduce the poverty of women and children.

Guests will enjoy ethnic specialties prepared by
caterers from Somalia, Ethiopia and Ghana who were assisted in developing their
businesses by WE’s Star Center. They will share how they prepare their dishes
and how they started their businesses. There will also be Brazilian folk music
by Nos de Chita, wine and light refreshments.

A locally founded
non-profit, run entirely by volunteers, the mission of Women’s Empowerment
International is to give women the tools they need to work their way out of
poverty. WE funds small, repayable business loans and services for women and
supports other poverty-reduction strategies in places where WE can make a
difference.

As a funding
organization, WE partners with credible microfinance partners who work directly
with impoverished women. By working closely with these partners and visiting
their projects around the world, WE ensures that funds go to women in need. In
fact, over 95% of these loans are repaid with interest and then re-loaned again
and again.

During its first
decade, WE donated over $750,000 to fund more than 15,000 business loans in
Ghana, Benin, Honduras, Uganda and Mexico.

The WE STAR Center
has helped poor San Diego women launch 175 businesses, strengthen 75 others,
and lessen or eliminate their need for public assistance.

This year WE is
raising $200,000 in its Building Prosperity program. This will fund thousands
of business loans for impoverished women in Ghana, Uganda and Honduras, and
enable San Diego women to launch approximately 26 new businesses and expand
many others.

WE’s promise is to
empower more women to build prosperity for themselves, their families, their
communities, and the world.
