Tsunami Watching in La Jolla

Many gathered at the beach this morning to watch for signs of the tsunami following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan on Friday night.

A crowd of curious La Jollans gathered Friday morning at Windansea to watch for waves expected as a result of an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan. The National Weather Service reported that the tsunami's waves were expected to reach the shores in San Diego at 8:41 a.m. with wave heights of 2.3 feet in La Jolla.

By mid-morning only a handful of surfers braved the waters between Bonair and Westbourne streets, a popular surf spot. San Diego lifeguards stopped by to warn the surfers and the inquisitive crowd that continued to grow.

Surfline reported "broken up and spotty" surf conditions Friday morning for La Jolla.
