Sewage Spill in Del Mar Closes Beaches

A Friday afternoon sewage spill near 8th Street in Del Mar closed down beaches a quarter mile to the north and south of the spill site.

Approximately 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Pacific Ocean at 8th Street in Del Mar on Friday afternoon.The spill was caused by a blockage in a sewage line, according to the county's Division of Environmental Health. The blockage reported cause an overflow at a manhole and that sewage spilled into a nearby storm drain.

The spill was discovered at 2:50 p.m. and City of Del Mar staff stopped the release at 5 p.m. None of the spill was recovered.

Contamination signs were posted and beaches were closed a quarter mile north and a quarter mile south of the spill. The signs will remain in place until water samples show that the water is safe for recreational use, according to the county.
