County Officials Advise Residents to Avoid Beaches Following Large Earthquake in Japan

The National Weather Service says a tsunami wave height reached 2.8 feet in La Jolla.

San Diego County officials are advising areas residents to avoid county beaches, harbors and piers this morning due to hazardous currents following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan 9:47 PST Thursday.

“The currents that are going to be produced are going to be really strong and there could be very significant changes in the water levels on the coast,” said meteorologist Don Whitlow for San Diego National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service said tsunami wave heights reached 2.8 feet in La Jolla, 2.6 feet in Imperial Beach, and 1.2 feet at San Diego Navy Pier.

The NWS estimated the tsunami's California arrival time at 8:41 a.m. in La Jolla, 8:32 a.m. in San Pedro and 8:17 a.m. in Santa Barbara. For more estimated arrival times, click here.
