Rains Fall Hard on San Diego

San Diego police said the rain may have been a factor in several crashes on Saturday.

Heavy rain drenched parts of San Diego County today, and the downpours may continue into the evening, National Weather Service forecasters said today.

A low pressure system over coastal waters brought the rain, and was a possible source for isolated afternoon thunderstorms as the storm moves inland, according to forecasters.

Highs were expected to reach up to 67 degrees near the coast and about 59 in the mountains.

San Diego police said the rain may have been a factor in four crashes, including a single-vehicle crash just before 5 a.m., which sent two passengers to a hospital with injuries, not believed to be life threatening. Police said the driver lost control while driving west on Aero Drive near Santo Road, and then fled the scene, leaving the two injured passengers behind. Alcohol may have also been a factor in the crash, police said.

The low-pressure system also prompted a high surf advisory, which will remain in effect until 10 p.m. The waves and surf are expected to be between 5 and 8 feet, but San Diego lifeguards said as of late morning only one incident was reported, a beachgoer who was taken to a hospital after slipping on rocks in La Jolla.

The storm is expected to move toward Mexico tonight, forecasters predicted.
