Update: Sewage Spill Closes Torrey Pines State Beach

As a result of the power outage, an estimated 3.2 million gallons of sewage spilled from the San Diego metropolitan wastewater system.

Several beaches were closed to swimmers, surfers, divers and frolickers Friday due to a massive sewage spill in San Diego following the power outage.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said Friday morning that beaches north of Scripps Pier in La Jolla through Black’s Beach, Torrey Pines State Beach, Del Mar and Solana Beach will be closed for at least two days.

An estimated 3.2 million gallons of sewage spilled from Pump Station 64, located at 10745 Roselle St. in San Diego, into the Los Penasquitos Lagoon on Thursday at 5:50 p.m., according to county officials. As of late Friday morning, crews were still working to get the spill under control. The pollution flowed from Los Penasquitos Lagoon into the sea off Torrey Pines State Park.

In addition to notice of the beach closures, residents and businesses in La Jolla were advised to boil tap water before consumption. This is due to low water pressure following the power outage and is not related to the sewage spill.
