Photos: Kids and Parents Run with the Grunion

Join the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to learn about a unique fish species that only visits during high tide in spring.

On certain spring nights following high tides, hundreds of small grunion fish swim ashore to spawn. The female grunions bury themselves in the sand to lay eggs, while the males wrap themselves around the females to fertilize their eggs.

Learn more about this unique fish species and their mating rituals at Birch Aquarium's grunion run education program. After a presentation by Scripps' naturalists, participants will head out to the beach in hopes to catch the silvery grunions in action.

Birch Aquarium will host its next grunion educational program on May 5. Additional programs run May 19 and June 3.
