Home Fire Causes $4.5M in Damage

Fire and rescue officials estimate $3 million in structural damage and $1.5 million in property loss.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that Thursday’s fire at a home on the 1100 block of Van Nuys is a $4.5 million loss—$3 million in structural damages and a $1.5 million loss of contents, which included two classic cars in the garage. No one was injured in the fire. The home is on the border between La Jolla and Pacific Beach.

Maurice Luque, an information officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue, said the cause of the fire was accidental. He said a water heater ignited gasoline fumes from a garage-stored vehicle. The water heater was not on a raised pedestal as required by building code, according to officials.

Luque said the fire was confined to the garage and bedroom above the garage, but there was smoke and water damage in other parts of the two-story home.
