Dog licenses, microchips, rabies vaccinations and free gifts available at the clinic.

was a chance for San Diegans to reflect on whether they’re ready for unexpected emergencies or whether they still need to prepare.

To help people include furry loved ones in their family disaster preparations, the County’s Department of Animal Services will host a low-cost microchipping clinic at its shelter in San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The clinic at 5480 Gaines St. near the University of San Diego runs from noon to 2 p.m. Pet owners can have their dogs, cats and bunnies microchipped; dogs and cats vaccinated for rabies; and dogs licensed.

“During a fire or other emergencies, pets often get separated from their families,” County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson said. “A microchip greatly increases the chances that those animals will make it home again after the trouble has passed.”

Animal Services microchips pets for a one-time fee of $20, which includes the registration. Rabies vaccinations for dogs (4 months or older) and cats (3 months or older) are $6. Amnesty from late fees is offered to owners who have failed to license their dog or have allowed their dog’s annual license to lapse. Coupons for spaying ($50) and neutering ($25) are available for dogs, cats and bunnies.

Microchipping and rabies vaccinations are available to anyone, regardless of where they live. Licensing and spay or neuter coupons are available for residents who live in the department’s service area of the county’s unincorporated area or its contract cities of San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Santee.

For the protection of owners and their pets, dogs must be on a leash and cats in a carrier while at the clinic. For more information, contact the County Department of Animal Services at 619-767-2675 or visit sddac.com.
