Mike Curran’s Photo of La Jolla Beach ‘Monster’ Rode a Wave of Luck

Titled "Mom, the Big Monster Ate My Sandcastle," the image was one of three of his accepted for display.

Mike Curran was photographing a sunset south of the Children's Pool in La Jolla when he noticed two young girls in a shoving match over a sandcastle—sisters, it turns out.

At the moment he shot, a big foam wave consumed the sandcastle. Curran, a Mira Mesa resident, entered it with five other photos in the San Diego County Fair's Exhibition of Photography.

Titled "Mom, the Big Monster Ate My Sandcastle," the image taken with a Nikon D90 and 70-300mm lens was one of three accepted for display. Last year, Curran, 64, entered nine and saw two displayed.

His good fortune was topped by a fourth-place ribbon—his first ever in the photo contest—for a picture titled "The Storms of December."
