Discover Great Artists Tonight at The Children's School in La Jolla

The Children's School opens its gates and invites the public to celebrate our 2013 Great Artists as well as the students' creative interpretations of their works.

More than a month ago, students at The Children’s School began an in-depth, cross-curricular study of a specific artist as part of the school’s Great Artists Program.

Now in its fourteenth year at TCS, Great Artists encourages children from toddler age through eighth grade to develop an appreciation of art as they work through an integrated curriculum consisting of developmentally appropriate activities in language arts, math, science, and social studies. Students also explore the life, work, and artistic style of their classroom’s chosen artist. As with other project-based learning experiences at TCS, much of the content covered emerges from the unique interests of the students.

This year, classroom Great Artists range from Leonardo da Vinci and Salvador Dali to James Rizzi and Vlaimir Kush – just to name a few.

Today, the TCS campus is prepping for the Great Artists Grande Finale event tonight, Thursday, April 4 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. The Children’s School opens its gates and invites the public to celebrate all of the 2013 Great Artists as well as the students’ creative interpretations of their works. Classrooms across campus will be transformed into dynamic art spaces that showcase the children’s artistic endeavors and the depth of learning that the unit encourages.

Not only does the Great Artists Program filter into each classroom on campus, it also filters into The Dance Academy at TCS. Dancers have been studying the art of Degas, Matisse, Rodin, and Erté and have been interpreting their works in the form of dance as part an “Art of Motion” themed unit. “Art in Motion” performances are slated for 6:00 p.m., 6:40 p.m., and 7:15 p.m in the school’s Auditorium.
