Back to School Brigade Report

On Saturday, August 3, fourteen members of The Children’s School community – including five students, their parents, teachers, and alumni parents – volunteered at the Back to School Brigade at the San Diego Convention Center. This event, produced by Operation Homefront California, was an opportunity for children of active duty military personnel and veterans to select new school supplies, which had been donated to Operation Homefront.

Nine middle school students at The Children’s School had organized a school supply drive for this event; during the spring semester, they collected supplies to donate to Operation Homefront. This drive was inspired by a partnership with the film Least Among Saints, an award-winning independent film about veterans’ issues. The Children’s School also co-hosted a screening of the film, the proceeds of which were donated to Operation Homefront.

Seventh grade student Lucy Conover, who helped to organize the school supply drive and who volunteered at the Back to School Brigade, said of her experience, “This was really cool – it was really fun to meet the kids and to help them pick out their school supplies. I’m so glad we got to do this!”

Michelle Cohn, parent of a graduate of The Children’s School and associate producer of Least Among Saints, said, “We are so excited about the partnership being built between The Children’s School and Operation Homefront. It is inspiring to see the students’ passion and dedication and it’s been wonderful for them to make first-hand connections with the military children.”
