Underwater Golf Event Tees Off in La Jolla This Weekend

Based on Frisbee golf, I.B. Divers is hosting a underwater game and barbecue at La Jolla Shores on Saturday.

What do you get when you cross the classic sport of golf and SCUBA? Underwater golf, of course.

I.B. Divers, a dive shop with facilities in Imperial Beach and La Jolla, is hosting this wacky golf game at La Jolla Shores this weekend.

Kyle Stogsdall, owner of I.B. Divers, explained that players will throw 10-inch long rubberized torpedoes into buckets at five "holes" throughout the underwater course. Stogsdall said the game, played 20 to 40 feet underwater, is an adaptation of Frisbee golf.

“This idea was born out of a daydream,” said Stogsdall.

The game is open to certified divers. Players should bring or rent dive equipment, cameras and a competitive spirit.

I.B. Divers will also be barbecuing on Saturday. Certified divers and those interesting in becoming certified are invited to attend.

This is the first time the dive shop has hosted the game. If you are interested in playing, look for the I.B. Divers crew on the park side of the La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station at 9 a.m.

See you on the course!
