SDG&E Offers Cash for Using Less A/C Thursday

The first "reduce your use" day of the summer gives customers a small discount if they conserve electricity during peak hours.

San Diego Gas & Electric announced its first "reduce your use" day of the summer, meaning Thursday customers will get a small reduction in their electric bill for turning down air conditioning and turning off appliances from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

SDG&E instituted the program in part to help the grid cope wth the . New smart meters installed over the last year at the homes of most SDG&E customers make the program possible, according to utility officials. The meters allow customers and SDG&E to monitor their electricity usage in near real time.

The reduce your use day has been annouced in response to the extreme high temperatures over this week.
