Ohhhh, Mexico—Minus the Border Cross

Our "Bites Nearby" spot of the week is a casual Mexican spot worth stopping by the neighborhood for.

There’s a little Mexican joint in La Jolla reminiscent of a place you’d actually find in Mexico, and I’m not talking about the version claimed by an onslaught of American chain restaurants and phony vacation resort cantinas.

on Prospect is in the heart of the village, and, admittedly, surrounded by an array of more distinctive looking places on all sides. However, if your aim is to grab some uncomplicated, reasonably priced Mexican grub, this is your spot.

The place is clean and presentable, but the ambiance has an appealing tinge of that slightly seedy Yucatan Peninsula feel, evocative of a place say, downtown Cancun (the older part of town where the locals might go to grab a bite).

The menu is straightforward, including favorites such as carne asada, chile relleno and fajitas. Chef has also peppered in some bar food type options like chicken wings and hamburgesa (the Jose burger) appropriate for pairing with sporting events televised in the bar and dining room.

After consuming a complimentary, promptly refilled supply of chips and salsa, a margarita or two at happy hour (Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m.) and an assortment of food, including the usual accompaniments of rice and beans, you’ll leave Jose’s feeling a little more laid back than when you arrived.
