Numerous La Jolla Organizations Lose Tax-Exempt Status
The IRS believes the vast majority of these organizations are defunct.
More than 90 La Jolla nonprofits lost their tax-exempt status last week, but many may no longer exist.
The Internal Revenue Service announced on Thursday that approximately 275,000 organizations under the law have automatically lost their tax-exempt status because they did not file legally required annual reports for three consecutive years. The IRS believes the vast majority of these organizations are defunct, but it also announced special steps to help any existing organizations to apply for reinstatement of their tax-exempt status.
There a total of 93 nonprofits that lost their tax exempt status locally. The list includes the Blacks Beach Bares Association, the La Jolla Opera Guild and the International Surfing Hall of Fame.
