It looks like the fat lady hasn't sung for La Jolla Music. The La Jolla landmark, which was set to close last month amid the owner's declining health, has received a lifeline from La Jolla Town Council member and resident David Woo. La Jolla Music will remain open for business. Patrons of the 50-year-old music store will be able to visit its new location, just across the street at 7423 Girard Ave.
Since opening in 1962, La Jolla Music has provided an outlet for all things music, including lessons, music sheets and rent-to-own instruments. According to store manager Jaw-Xin Wang, when Woo heard that the store would be closing, he stepped in to find a solution, since his children have taken lessons at for several years, and it has become a beloved part of the community.
“[The new store] will be about 50 percent larger, but most of the space will be used for giving lessons,” Wang said. “We’ll be more focusing on providing lessons for students.”
The upgraded space, which is set to have its grand opening during the first week in September, allows for large and medium group lessons as well as individual lessons. Currently, the store employs about a dozen music teachers, and plans to add more. In addition, the large group lesson room will serve as a recording studio, a welcomed addition to the music store.
“For the most part we’re going to be more focused on customer service for the beginner to intermediate level,” Wang said. “We’ll be targeting that demographic and supporting everything around it with lessons, accessories and music sheets.”
News that La Jolla Music will remain open comes at an opportune time for students and their families as well. When the store was scheduled to close in July, many parents were left wondering where they would rent or purchase instruments for their kids during the school year. According to Wang, the store will have a full stock of instruments available for rental for the Fall 2012 semester.
And those looking to score a deal on instruments and other music accessories are also in luck. After the new store opens, much of the remaining inventory at the old location will be available at a discounted price.
