La Jolla Loses Wolfgang Puck's Jai Restaurant

The upscale venue by the La Jolla Playhouse recently closed due to fluctuating traffic.

A night out in La Jolla won't include Wolfgang Puck's popular Jai restaurant anymore.

The upscale Asian-cuisine restaurant next to the La Jolla Playhouse on UC San Diego's campus has closed due to inconsistent traffic.

“You have a performing arts center that isn’t open every day, but when it’s open the restaurant was busy,” Pamela Brunson, vice president for marketing for Wolfgang Puck Catering, told U-T San Diego. “Looking at how our business is laid out in the Playhouse and also in the surrounding San Diego area, it was part of an overall business strategy decision to leave the Playhouse.”

In its stead, UCSD Hospitality Services has been catering to theatergoers with two fill-ins while a new tenant for the space is found: La Jolla Playhouse Coffee Bar, which serves specialty coffees, sandwiches, salads and desserts, and La Jolla Playhouse Restaurant, which provides hot dishes.

The Playhouse also offers a list of suggested dining venues, though none are as close as Jai's, such as Rock Bottom a few blocks down La Jolla Village Drive.
