La Jolla-Based Business Makes List of Biggest Tax Debtors in State

Jack's La Jolla owes over $1 million in back taxes, according to the state Board of Equalization.

Jack’s La Jolla, the now defunct nightclub that has sat vacant since July 2009, is the 119th largest tax debtor in California, according to the state Board of Equalization. Jack’s parent company, Wellington Inc., owes $1,082,475 in back taxes.

The California state Board of Equalization on Tuesday issued a report listing the 250 largest delinquent accounts. The board posts this updated information every quarter “removing amounts that are being addressed through payment arrangement, bankruptcy, litigation, or appeal,” according to its website.

California Target Enterprises Inc. of Downey topped the list with $18.2 million in back taxes, followed by C & JD USA, Inc. with $16.1 million.

It was not long after Jack's La Jolla abruptly closed its doors that veteran nightclub entrepreneur Mike Viscuso stepped up with big plans to fill the multiple level space on the corner of Girard Avenue and Wall Street. Earlier this year it was rumored that the project would not move forward. Viscuso, owner of Belo, Decos and On Broadway, declined to comment in February and March that his project "Mike's La Jolla" would not move forward. La Jolla Patch also asked the listing brokers attempting to lease space to comment on the project but received no answer.

Viscuso confirmed in a May 23 article in the San Diego Union-Tribune that Mike's La Jolla will not open.
