Many lay claims to have the having the best beef, freshest toppings, most options for customization, but these burger joints have made it to the top of the list in La Jolla. It is time for the locals to decide who will rank No. 1 in the Battle of the Burger.

Smashburger, located at Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, sets its goal to satisfy the modern burger lover. Mixing flavor, savor and smash to deliver a fresh cooked-to-order burger. Upon entering the Certified Green restaurant, you get to select from their four main types of burgers: beef, turkey, salmon and quinoa. Add some fries, onion rings or even a salad, if you dare.

Burger Lounge has a nice clean feel - a great quinoa burger and malts that satisfy!

I can't pick -- I love both! The veggie burger at BL and the Swiss mushroom at Smashburger are truly divine.

Smashburger all the way! Smashfries are simply irresistible and I love to mix it up with a San Diego Smashburger, Buffalo Smashchicken, BBQ Ranch Smashsalad or a Classic Smashdog!

Smashburger is the only option in SD. My husband and I are obsessed. I love the Avocado Club Smashchicken and he always orders the Spicy Baja Smashburger. And the chocolate shake...forget about it! You won't find a better shake in SD.

Smashburger - no question about it! They have the best-tasting meat, it's 100% Certified Angus Beef and I am obsessed with the San Diego Burger. Plus, the sides are amazing and I can't get enough of the new breakfast menu downtown.

I love Smashburger! Seriously obsessed with the smashsalads and the sweet potato fries. Is it lunchtime yet?

Burger Lounge: No comparsion. Grass fed beef, organic whole wheat buns home made french fries and onion rings. The salads that are thoughtful and delicious. They use better ingredients and it shows! Smashburger: Commodity ingredients from the founders of Quiznos in a room that looks like Circut City. You decide. Smoke and mirrors.

Smashburgers is so disgusting, I sadly tried it once! What's the appeal with flattening your bleached beef and cooking til crispy? I'll take grass-fed meat any day and Burger Lounge has the best, juiciest burgers in San Diego. And their fries are damn good too! No comparison between all-natural meat vs. bleached beef products!

Definitely Burger Lounge! Socially conscious AND delicious. Their business model goes beyond simply satisfying a customer's food craving. Not to mention the genius that creates a turkey burger patty incorporating fresh basil.

BURGER LOUNGE. I don't know anything about Smashburger, but it sounds like a lot of hype. (Anyone ever see the movie "Good Burger"? The bad-guy competition was called Mondo Burger. Just sayin'.) And I tend to like NOT feeling like crap when I walk out of a burger restaurant. When I eat at Burger Lounge, I feel full, and happy. You could say they make the *true* "Happy Meal." ALSO, why the heck is there a Battle of the Burger? Why not just measure smiles, waistbands, and cholesterol to see who's got a better burger?

I eat Smashburger by our office every week and would welcome you to measure my waistline, Daniel :) Also, Katie, I have asked a lot of questions about their meat. It's 100% Certified Angus Beef that is fresh and never frozen. All of their ingredients - produce, buns, etc - are fresh as well. I know it's all a matter of personal taste, but I personally love a burger that's full of flavor and Smashburger's the one that satisfies my burger cravings :)

@Danielle: Fair enough. However, I would be remiss in my duty if I didn't mention the service at Burger Lounge in Kensington being some of the finest for which you're not obligated to tip. I'll give SmashBurger a shot if I find myself in La Jolla and hungry at the same time.

Burger Lounge for sure! I like Smashburger too, but my choice is Burger Lounge and this is coming from a completely unbiased customer with no ties to either chain.

Burger Lounge has simply THE BEST veggie burger I've had, ever! So my vote goes to Burger Lounge. By the way the onion rings are off the hook too!

Their both great. I tried the Vegetarian on the "Tast of La Jolla" on Tuesday night (Organic quinoa, brown rice, garbanzo beans, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, onion, garlic, panko, parsley, chipotle, Monterey Jack cheese) with the onion rings and a malt really great. However, the Smashburger's "San Diego" (Fresh avocado, fresh cilantro and onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and spicy chipotle mayo on a torta roll. Served with a wedge of lime). is awesome with the sweet potato fries. I wish they were open now too.
