Activists Will Save Beach Space for Seals During Fireworks Show

Activists plan on holding hands to form a human chain around a portion of Children's Pool beach in La Jolla on July Fourth.

Dozens of seal activists are scheduled to hold hands to form a human chain near the lower portion of Children's Pool in La Jolla on July Fourth. La Jolla Friends of the Seals volunteers and other supporters will create this human barrier to save a space on the beach for the seals before, during and after the fireworks show.

Ellen Shively of the La Jolla Friends of the Seals told La Jolla Patch that the seals will be frightened and head back into the water as the crowds build up and the excitement grows for the fireworks show.

"Seals need to haul out of the water to sleep for at least eight hours in a 24-hour period and the group hopes to help them retrieve at least a part of the night without further interruption."

The activists will gather around 6 p.m. on Monday to "cordon off the haul-out area of the beach" and stay through the completion of the fireworks show at 9 p.m and until the seals return to the popular beach late at night.
