A few hundred water lovers helped fight cancer in La Jolla on Sunday. UC San Diego's Moores Center held a Luau & Longboard Invitational on Sunday near Scripps Pier to raise money for fund cancer research. The annual event includes a surf competition, opportunity to meet surfing legends, luau and silent auction.
Since founded nearly 20 years ago, the fundraiser has raised more than $5 million to fund cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
The longboard competition was held in the morning and the luau under a big tent kicked off in the early afternoon.
In addition, Moores Cancer Center awards one top honor each year. This year the Rell Sunn award was awarded to Nobel laureate and UC San Diego professor Roger Tsien.
Tsien is a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He developed a way to image and possibly event deliver specially targeted drug to cancer tumors.
