Cigarette Butts and Headless Statues a Growing Problem, Data Shows
San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider Foundation revealed the 2011 San Diego Beach Cleanup data on Thursday. Top trash items collected from the beaches include cigarette butts and plastic. Strange items include a headless statues in La Jolla.
The results are in: Cigarette butts topped the list of litter collected on San Diego's beaches again last year, and the problem is getting worse, according to a report released today by San Diego Coastkeeper and the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter.
The data showed that about 11,000 more cigarette butts were collected in beach clean-up events in 2011, compared to 2010. Styrofoam and plastics also ranked high on the list.
The San Diego Coastkeeper and the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter join forces to conduct twice-monthly beach cleanups throughout the county and ask volunteers to keep detailed records about the debris they remove. That information is compiled into an annual report to give us a better picture of what kind of shape our local beaches are in.

Those volunteers also find some pretty interesting items, which are also compiled into an amusing list. One La Jolla beaches made that list: La Jolla Shores, where two headless statues were found. You can read the full list here.
