We'll Weather the Weather

Having her first month under her belt, The Misplaced Midwesterner discusses her observations concerning the weather and how she's adapting to the sunshine.

An obvious post for the early stages of this blog, would be about the weather. The sunshine and great temperatures are two of the first things my husband and I noticed as soon as we entered California. I remember driving down the highway with the windows wide open so we could enjoy the cool breeze and sunshine. I also remember noticing that we were the only car with their windows open. Party like a Midwesterner.

Since coming here, we've experienced breezy days, cool nights and days where there is not a cloud in the sky. This is a welcomed change considering what we're used to. I have heard, however, this is considered a "cold winter?"

To give you San Diegans an idea of the typical February and March from where I came from, I'm going to give you some numbers. I grew up on the Ohio-side of Lake Erie in a town called Avon Lake. The average March temperate for Avon Lake is 49 degrees but they are recently experiencing crazy-warm temperatures, some reaching over 70 degrees. This warm weather they're currently experiencing will probably be followed by snowfall. No joke. (I remember winters that would get as cold as -30 degrees and I remember experiencing heavy snowfall in April during my senior year of high school.)

So, here I am, experiencing summer-like temperates on a daily basis. I love walking down the street in short sleeves without batting an eyelash at the thought of getting pneumonia or some other cold. I also love walking next to a person bundled up in winter parka and scarf. Again, we Midwesterners know how to party.

I still have my winter parka and snow boots in case of an apocalyptic snowstorm, but maybe my boots can be re-purposed as "sand boots".

Because of these great temperatures, I've noticed that the house always reflect the outdoor temperatures. The windows aren't double-paned and the walls aren't insulated. Before moving here, I was convinced I would never turn my heater on. Because the apartment gets so chilly, I've had it on nearly every night since I've been here. (And here I thought my tough, Midwestern skin could make it through these "cold" nights.)

What is nice though, is that the temperatures don't fluctuate too much and I'm not experiencing all four seasons in one week. I can get used to this.
