A Day at Mission Bay

The Misplaced Midwesterner leashes up her furry companion and takes the dog to Mission Bay for a relaxing evening full of sand, Girl Scouts and wet fur.

One of the first outdoor attractions I checked out with my husband was Mission Bay. They bay is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country and has walking paths, playgrounds, water access aquatic vehicles, pavilions and beach access. My husband and I are avid runners and this is one of our favorite places to hit the pavement. For short runs, we run around the park and for longer runs, we run onto Fiesta Island.

The other evening, we decided to take the dog for a walk out at the park. Gidget, our beagle-German Shepherd mix, loves to experience new places and smell everything in sight. She's very well-behaved and gets along with just about everyone.

The weather was cool and sunny and this was our first time enjoying the park as non-runners. We could really appreciate the views, the people and the winding path. During our walk, we even caught glimpse of some festivities in honor of Girl Scout's 100th anniversary. It was neat to walk through and see so many girls committed to such a wonderful cause.

Gidget loved the park and survived a two mile walk. Her favorite part was probably running into the water to chase the birds. This was hilarious for us because this is the same dog who refuses to go outside to do her business during any form of inclement weather. She hates getting her paws and fur wet. (Note: What's not captured on video is her reaction to the water. After the birds had flown away, she turned around and looked at me with terror in her face. She didn't know what she did to get so wet and didn't know what to do. It was hilarious.)

What are some other great places to go running or walk the dog?  I love suggestions!
