Gillispie's 2013 elementary summer program promises exciting offerings, such as these one and two week-long camps NOW REGISTERING for the final weeks of summer!

Located in the village of La Jolla, The Gillispie School offers summertime programming that will keep your student fully engaged in purposeful learning and warm-weather fun.

Through My Eyes: Photo Fun with Outside the Lens

Week 7: July 29 - August 2

9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Grades 3-6*, $225

Learn new photography and digital editing skills, while working on creative projects all about you! This fun and interactive camp will help you use a camera in new and exciting ways, including how to add cool effects to your photographs using a computer. At the end of the week, you will have a series of creative images of yourself that you will be proud to take home and share.

Who wants to be a DJ? with DJ Taverna

Week 7: July 29 - August 2

12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Grades 3-6, $225

Aspiring entrepreneurs, join a professional DJ and learn the techniques to host your own party! Learn how to operate equipment, blend music, and entertain a crowd. Freeze dance, limbo, musical chairs, and “Simon Says” are just a few of the daily contests. Don’t miss this new class at Gillispie!

Jedi Engineering with PlayWell Instructors

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

12:30 - 3:30 p.m., Grades K-1, $225

Young Jedi, boys and girls, will explore worlds far, far away and engineering principles right in front of them. Build planes, droids, and palaces inspired by designs made in a galaxy far, far away! This is an offering of original designs for young Jedi from PlayWell TEKnologies.

Serve, Lead, Succeed Summer Edition with Mrs. Watkins

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Grades 3-6, $225

Spend your time this summer making a difference in the community by joining the Serve. Lead. Succeed. Team for a week of hands-on service activities both on and off the Gillispie campus. This course is designed for students who have a passion for serving others and are not afraid of a little hard work.

3rd Grade Jump Start

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Grade 3, $225

This class is designed to meet the individual needs of students while providing knowledge, skills, experience, and confidence to help them get ready for the upcoming school year. The class incorporates direct instruction, small-group instruction, and hands-on activities. Reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, writing, mathematics, and technology will be topics covered in the class.

Magical Mathematicians

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Grade 2 - 4, $225

Expand your mind as you solve word problems and learn tricks to spark your interest in math. Students will explore place value, money, measurement, and graphing in this math class filled with fun. Literature and manipulatives will be used to enhance the learning process. This course is perfect for students who want to maintain or enrich their grasp of math concepts.

Robotics with PlayWell Instructors

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

12:30 - 3:30 p.m., Grades 4 - 6, $225

Learn about building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT system. Participants learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Working in small groups, students will complete several projects and mini challenges through which they will learn how to control the robot to avoid obstacles and pick up and carry objects. Projects are structured to allow students to work in an open-ended, investigative environment while having fun. Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

Wizards, Dragons, Trolls, Gnomes, Fairies, and Pookas with Ms. Walters

Week 8: August 5 - August 9

12:30 - 3:30 p.m., Grades K - 6, $225

Take your pick during one week of imaginary creature creations! We’ll be making homes, snacks, environments, clothing, and more. Using art concepts and tools, we’ll make your ideas come to life. Art can do that!

Spanish Jumpstart with Señora Radchik

Weeks 7 & 8: July 29 - August 9

9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Grade 2 - 6, $400

Get ready for Spanish! Special course for new or current Gillispie students. Students will learn Spanish through games, songs, and dance. Prepare yourself for the upcoming school year!

Add-On Afternoon Swimming!

Offered All 8 Weeks 

Kindergarten through Grade 6

A fee-based afternoon session offers swimming at the Coggan Aquatic Center. The Center’s swim instructors teach group lessons, and campers will be placed in appropriate swim-level groups and learn skills that will improve their swimming ability. After the lessons, the campers will have free swim time under the supervision of a certified lifeguard and the Gillispie teachers. The Center is conveniently located at La Jolla High School; the students and their Gillispie teachers walk the not-quite-three blocks each way to/from swimming.

Early Childhood (EC) Day Camp

For Children Ages 3-5

New addition to the EC Camp! Every Wednesday, visiting instructors from Mad Science will conduct an exciting, hands-on science program for EC children to spark their curiosity and build their enthusiasm for science. Program topics will include: magnetic attraction, world of worms, energy and motion, and much more!

Our early childhood teachers are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, intellectual, and social development of the young child. The teaching staff includes several Gillispie faculty members who have a wealth of teaching experience, along with other experienced professionals. Children will enjoy an array of activities during camp, including indoor and outdoor games, water play, crafts, and dramatic play. EC day camp runs Monday through Friday.
