Weekend Forecast: Fashion Flurry

The world's largest gathering of fashion film creators takes over La Jolla.

The word “fashion” is usually synonymous with destination cities, like Paris, New York and London. And Los Angeles takes the cake when it comes to big movie productions. But our small jewel-of-a-community is making a name for itself with its second major Fashion Film Festival.

Beginning this evening, the will be filled with celebrities, fashion icons, designers and film gurus galore. Big names in fashion, like Karl Lagerfeld, Alessandra Ambrosia (the perfect excuse to drag your boyfriend along), and Bruce Weber, are coming together and merging with the head honchos of film.

“Thirteen directors and seven producers from all over the world (are) coming together to form the first community of fashion film creators,” said La Jolla Fashion Film Festival director Fred Sweet in an e-mail to Patch. “It is the largest gathering of fashion film creators in world history!”

The two-day festival boasts parties and extravagant receptions, as well as 20 short film viewings each night. The films are directed by the likes of Johan Renck, Marcus K. Jones, Zaiba Jabbar and the aforementioned Lagerfeld, to name a few. The short movies combine the element of visual art, both in fashion and film, with technology and new media.

“Fashion films are fashion stories, which used to be in magazines, put to movement, as in films,” Sweet said. “The advent of the internet enabled this to happen.”

Among the flurry of films, flowy dresses and faux fur, two seminars will be held, led by feminist artist Kiki Smith and Robin Kay, the president of the Fashion Design council of Canada and founder of LG Fashion Week in Toronto.

For anyone who’s a lover of iconic pop art, never-before-seen Andy Warhol paintings will make their exclusive debut at the opening night after-party at nightclub—a great experience for the all the art appreciators here in La Jolla.

If you missed out on a chance to get a ticket, stop pouting and start shopping. Sweet said a third annual festival is already in the talks.

“We are already planning next year and have commitments from some exciting sponsors.”
