Hear a Ballad, Have a Laugh

'The Ballad of Juan Jose' is playing at UC San Diego through Feb. 26.

Things are getting provocative over at thanks to and you’ve got a couple more weeks left to see for yourself.

is currently playing in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre at UC San Diego. The comedy theater trio Culture Clash wrote the production. The prolific Chicano/Latino group was founded in 1984 by Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza and is known for its provocative theatre style. According to a press release, the group is currently named along with Shakespeare in a lawsuit by the Arizona Attorney General for material and plays unsuitable for Tucson High School students. The case goes before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this spring in San Francisco.

The Ballad of Juan José follows a man who is furiously studying for his U.S. citizenship exam. Along the way, Jose goes through a whirlwind journey of pivotal moments in American history, meeting a handful of citizens who influence him throughout the journey.

Ready for a journey through American history as seen through the eyes of an outsider? Watch the La Jolla Playhouse production of American Night: The Ballad of Juan José at UCSD’s Potiker Theatre. Show times vary throughout the week, though no showings take place on Mondays. This comedy plays through Feb. 26.
