Have a 'Phenomenal' Weekend at MCASD

Visit the new exhibit, talk with the creators, learn about light, make art with the family and more.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) La Jolla is having one phenomenal weekend, with two days of activities for all ages.

The spectacle starts on Saturday with a at the museum. Guests can visit MCASD and have the opportunity to hear from light and space scholars. The event is in conjunction with the newest exhibit at the museum, Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface, a look into the lives of 13 artists working in Los Angeles in the 1960s and ‘70s.

The symposium will feature the writers behind the book Phenomenal, Michael Auping, Robin Clark, Stephanie Hanor, Adrian Kohn, and Dawna Schuld. They will share highlights of their research and senior scientist and head of the contemporary research at the Getty Conservation Institute Tom Learner will also be on hand talking about the exhibit, of which he is the curator.

Phenomenal includes various sculptures that utilize different types of light and sensory phenomena. Things like natural light, neon tubing, acrylic, polyester resin and more are used as a treat for your eyes. The exhibit runs through January 2012.

Admission to the symposium is $5 general admission, plus museum admission ($10.) Students and members can visit the in-house talk with the experts for free, but students will pay $5 museum admission. The symposium is on Saturday at 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Families who are looking for a weekend activity can also visit the exhibit at the museum, but on Sunday. An will be set up for parents and their kids to explore the art-making experience by using materials inspired by the Phenomenal exhibition.

The family fun is on Sunday, from 2-4 p.m., and costs museum admission for each family member, plus $10 for a family up to five. Member’s will get in free. The Family Art Lab falls on the same day as which will feature member perks like:

• A 20 percent discount in the X Store, along with hosted refreshments
• A free Family ArtLab  
• A tour of Phenomenal at 12 p.m., led by a Gallery Educator (public welcome)
• The opportunity to bring a friend for free (bonus: when your friend joins as a Member that day, you and your friend will receive a free x-logo tumbler)
