Hats Off to Dr. Seuss; Personal Hat Tour Coming to La Jolla

Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel's hats will be on displayed in an exhibition touring 16 cities, including La Jolla this summer.

We all know and love Dr. Seuss’ children’s books, but few of us know of his collection of hats. La Jollan Audrey Geisel, the widow of Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, recently opened up her husband’s closet for a peek at his colorful, crazy and fantastic collection.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s second book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, a special exhibition will tour the U.S.—a collection of Dr. Seuss’s hats. And lucky for us, the tour will stop in La Jolla.

The exhibition called Hats Off to Dr. Seuss! kicked off in New York on Feb. 1. The traveling tour has 16 stops, including two locally.

“In his artwork, as in his personal life, Dr. Seuss saw hats as transformational,” an announcement of the tour stated. “And from the time he was a small boy in Springfield, Mass., he was aware of their inherent magic. Far beyond their functionality, hats were the accent—the exclamation point—on a person’s behavior. They could entertain, delight and embellish, even tease and taunt, but most of all, hats helped Dr. Seuss deliver a world of life-changing inspiration."
