'Hands on a Hardbody' Represents La Jolla at Tonys in NYC

The La Jolla Playhouse's "Hands On a Hardbody" was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score Written for the Theatre.

Hands on a Hardbody, which opened on Broadway last month and was premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse last year, went home empty handed at The Tony Awards in New York City Sunday night. The musical was nominated for three awards, including Best Original Score.

The nominees from Hands on a Hardbody were Keala Settle for Best Performance by an Actress in a Feature Role in a Musical, Keith Carradine for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical and Trey Anastasio, lead singer of jam band Phish, for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre. The awards were given to Andrea Martin of Pippin, Gabriel Ebert of Matilda the Musical and Cyndi Lauper for music and lyrics in Kinky Boots.

The La Jolla Playhouse has sent 24 productions to Broadway and earned 35 Tonys so far.

The playhouse congratulated to two former La Jolla Playhouse employees who won Tony Awards last night on its Facebook page. Peggy Eisenhauer won for Best Lighting Design of a Play for Lucky Guy. She worked on Dangerous Game - Two Tango Pieces staged at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1989. And Leon Rothenberg, who won for Best Sound Design of a Play for The Nance. He worked on Herringbone, which was performed at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2009.
