This week we'll help guide you through the long weekend with breaks by the sea and a dinner with doggie friends, capped by an afternoon with Beatrix Potter.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

Where/when: , La Jolla, 9:30 a.m., Feb. 16.

Why Go: If you're a parent of an incoming kindergartner or are interested in enrolling your child at the campus, meet in the auditorium for a tour.

Price: Free.

Where/when: , La Jolla, 11 a.m., Feb. 19.

Why Go: For SEA Days, which this month features explorers from CalEchoes, a cruise for scientists and grad students to study the diverse Southern California coast.

Price: Free with paid museum admission of $8-$12.

Where/when: Rancho Coastal Humane Society, Encinitas, 4 p.m., Feb. 18.

Why Go: To be part of "Dinner With the Dogs," a program to give kids ages 5 and up the chance to meet, play with and eat beside some of the animals at the center. The latest in the series of monthly events comes up this week. 

Price: $20, registration required.

Where/when: Classic Youth Theatre, Solana Beach, 2 p.m., Feb. 20.

Why Go: To see "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," Beatrix Potter's timeless children's story, as interpreted by a local theater group. 

Price: $10

Where/when: La Jolla branch , La Jolla, 2 p.m., Feb. 22.

Why Go: To see Babies, last year's documentary that followed four babies in four cultures around the world. Imagine the discussion you'll have with your youngsters about when they were that small.

Price: Free.
