Give the Gift of Theater

Inspire and enchant your loved ones with a night (or entire season) of drama and music.

All of our shopping paid off. We featured nine holiday gifts from La Jolla shops and artists over the past nine days. Today we offer you the final gift on our list just in time for Christmas.

With the world-renowned right in your backyard, giving the gift of theater is an easy solution to your holiday shopping dilemma. Its current show, Jesus Christ Superstar, is a super mega hit that’s on the fast track to Broadway. And there’s plenty more to look forward to next year.

In March, acclaimed comedienne Sandra Bernhard will perform a four-night run of I Love Being Me, Don’t You? at the Playhouse. The one-woman show is a mixed bag of musical numbers and Bernhard’s signature, spirited commentary on everything from Bristol Palin to Jennifer Anniston to Congress.

In April, the Playhouse will debut a new musical, Hands on a Hardbody, with music by Trey Anastasio of the popular band Phish and Amanda Green (High Fidelity, Bring It On: The Musical). The world-premiere production, commissioned by the Playhouse, is based on a documentary film about a contest to win a truck in East Texas. Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, Grey Gardens) is penning the book. And for an added bonus, the show features choreography by Benjamin Millepied, who also choreographed the film Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman.

Gift certificates are available in $25 increments and can be used toward individual tickets or season subscriptions. The theater also offers group discounts and specially priced $20 tickets for patrons who are 30 and younger
