Open Studios

Saturday April 2 at 3:00pm the Master of Fine Arts and PhD in Art Practice students at UC San Diego will open their studios to the public and share their creative space. The breadth of contemporary artwork on display is one of the trademarks of the Visual Arts Department; students’ pieces range from sound installations to historic photography to urban mapping. This year’s Open Studios event features the work of 52 talented artists. There will be a curated group exhibit, ongoing film screenings, and coinciding satellite exhibits at community art spaces to complement the open studios.

The group exhibit will take place in the Visual Arts Facility Gallery, running on April 1-2, and will provide a fresh perspective to the department’s rich history. Current visual arts graduate students are selecting a past MFA thesis, between 1972 and 2010, and responding to the piece. The collective exhibition will highlight the historical significance of the research and artwork produced through the Visual Arts Department.

In addition to the activities taking place on campus, UC San Diego artists have collaborated with local galleries to exhibit their work throughout the community. Graduate students are currently working with Agitprop Gallery, Art Produce, San Diego Space for Art and Sushi Contemporary Performance and Visual Arts to coordinate shows that will coincide with Open Studios.
