Looking for a fun, pop culture way to start off the New Year? Then you’re in luck
because through Thursday, several incredible films from Japan’s revered Studio Ghibli are being screened at the La Jolla Village Landmark Theatre.
For years, Studio Ghibli has created award-winning animated films. The theater’s Studio Ghibli Collection of films features some of the best work from legendary directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
These are not your father’s animated films. They are part Disney, part Pixar, combining beautiful and breathtaking animation with heartfelt messages, usually about respecting the environment and living with nature.
Many of the films feature strong female characters, such as Princess Mononoke, en epic fantasy about a girl who fights to protect her beloved forest.
Other standouts in the week-long showcase include Castle in the Sky, about a young boy and a girl with a magic crystal who race pirates and foreign agents in search of a legendary floating castle.
Spirited Away is one of the most recent and popular of the films, a dazzling
movie about a lonely girl in a new town who enters an alternate reality filled
with numerous spirits and monsters
For years, these films have captured the imagination of animation and film fans the world over. Now is a great time to see them on the big screen.
