Dazzling Japanese Animated Films Showcased in La Jolla This Week

Combining the beauty of Disney with the heart of Pixar, Japan's Studio Ghibli has made some dazzling animated films over the years. This week, they are being showcased in La Jolla.

Looking for a fun, pop culture way to start off the New Year? Then you’re in luck
because through Thursday, several incredible films from Japan’s revered Studio Ghibli are being screened at the La Jolla Village Landmark Theatre.

For years, Studio Ghibli has created award-winning animated films. The theater’s Studio Ghibli Collection of films features some of the best work from legendary directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

These are not your father’s animated films. They are part Disney, part Pixar, combining beautiful and breathtaking animation with heartfelt messages, usually about respecting the environment and living with nature.

Many of the films feature strong female characters, such as Princess Mononoke, en epic fantasy about a girl who fights to protect her beloved forest.

Other standouts in the week-long showcase include Castle in the Sky, about a young boy and a girl with a magic crystal who race pirates and foreign agents in search of a legendary floating castle.

with numerous spirits and monsters

For years, these films have captured the imagination of animation and film fans the world over. Now is a great time to see them on the big screen.
