Cirque du Soleil Returns: ‘Totem’ Tells the Story of the Human Race

San Diego County residents will soon see evolution spiced in a way that would even make Charles Darwin proud.

Cirque du Soleil will unveil its production Totem under its signature blue and yellow Grand Chapiteau at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on April 25.

The production—which is currently selling tickets—tells the evolutionary story of the human species and its interactions with other species.

Premiered in April 2010 and produced with 52 acrobats in 10 different acts, artistic director Tim Smith said the show has progressed over the years.

“What’s great is that Cirque mandates creation unlike any other industry,” Smith said. “Other companies will make a show, freeze it and send it out. At Cirque, we constantly motivate the show so that it progresses positively from show to show. The show you see Thursday will be different from the show you see Friday.”

Smith, who has worked in the industry for 15 years and has been with the Canadian company for two years, said the production encompasses artists from 17 different countries who speak 11 different languages.

“This unique environment of having such diverse artists from all over the world—though it has its challenges that must be met—is incredibly rewarding when you all come to the same page,” he said.

“Ninety-nine percent of the audience will walk away saying two things: ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before,’ and, ‘Where did you find these people?’ ”
