California Young Playwrights Contest Features Local Writers

Sydney Yockey, a Bishop's School student, and Kaylin Greisen's play is one of several featured in the California Young Playwrights contest.

Five winning works from the California Young Playwrights Contest will be performed through April 10 at the Lyceum Theatre. Winning playwrights include Sydney Yockey, a student, and Kaylin Greisen. The two co-wrote The Spirits of the Bells. In the comedic play, an 18-year-old girl tries to prove that spirits are responsible for continuously ringing her town’s bell tower, creating a dilemma for spirits who are given the option of becoming human again.

Additional winners are: Trevor, by Ben Kelly, 18, of Carlsbad; Next Train to Nowhere, by Kelsey Bavencoff, 18, of Santee; and Russet, by Kira Nolan, 11, of Encinitas.

The plays will be performed April 3 and April 5-10 at the Lyceum Theatre, located at 9 Horton Plaza, San Diego.
