Hear Stan Levenson Read From His Memoir and Learn to Write Your Own

Author Stan Levenson will speak at 7 p.m., Thursday at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. Memoirist Sid Shapira will share his process for creating family memoirs.

Learn about memoirs and memories at the on Thursday evening. Author Stan Levenson will speak about his memoir When Brooklyn Was Heaven: A Memoir from Brooklyn to LA and Places In-Between and San Diego-based writer Sid Shapira will share tips to writing your own memoir at 7 p.m.

In his latest book, Levenson recounts growing up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression and his rise to becoming a world renowned fundraiser helping schools and school districts raise millions. He recounts tales from his time in the U.S. Navy, trips to upstate New York, and concerns of World War II.

In addition, Shapira will share his process of creating family histories. Shapira created a Stories Be Told process.

"During the presentation, I will outline the many reasons for documenting one’s life story. While one can’t deny the thrill of reliving cherished memories through words and images, the opportunity to share a special gift – one’s life story – with loved ones is truly unique," said Shapira in an email. "Preserving family stories is sustaining history – something that will impact and influence future generations."
