Your Vision's Not Blurred, It's Just La Jolla's Newest Mural

"The Shores" on Girard Avenue is La Jolla's newest mural in the its public art series.

The latest addition to the Murals of La Jolla public art series is “The Shores,” by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie. It was installed on Oct. 28 on the 7500 block of Girard Avenue not far from Harry's Coffee Shop, between Pearl Street and Torrey Pines Road.

Catherine Opie received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from CalArts. She teaches at UCLA.

PBS said the following about Opie's work:
Whether documenting political movements, queer subcultures, or urban transformation, Opie’s images of contemporary life comprise a portrait of our time in America, which she often considers in relation to a discourse of opposition. Her work resonates with formal ideas that convey the importance of “the way things should look,” evidence of the influence of her early exposure to the history of art and painting.

Opie's work has appeared in major exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum in New York, MCA Chicago and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
