Strong Rip Tides, High Surf Expected at San Diego Beaches

This could result in dangerous swimming conditions for Thanksgiving beachgoers.

Strong rip currents and high surf are expected along the San Diego County coastline starting Thursday afternoon, which could result in dangerous swimming conditions for Thanksgiving beachgoers.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory today for the county's coastal areas, which will go into effect at 2 p.m. Thursday and extend until 6 p.m. Friday. Surf of 5-7 feet with sets of up to 9 feet are expected along west-facing beaches.

NWS meteorologists said strong rip currents were likely, especially during later morning and early afternoon hours as the high tide transitions to low tide.

Minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas, such as beach parking lots, and localized beach erosion could also be possible, forecasters said.

National Weather Service meteorologists said a large west-northwest swell generated by a low pressure system over the Eastern Pacific would affect coastal waters starting Thursday afternoon and would peak Thursday night into Friday morning. The swell and surf are expected to lessen Friday evening, forecasters said.
