Scripps Institute Researcher Receives McArthur 'Genius' Award

Dr. Phil Baran's research involves creating useful chemicals and drugs isolated from natural sources through a process called "total synthesis."

Dr. Phil S. Baran, an organic chemist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, was among the 13 men and 11 women officially named MacArthur fellows on Wednesday.

According to The New York Times, the 2013 fellowships from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation come with a stipend of $625,000 paid over five years.

Dr. Baran's research focuses on the art and science of organic synthesis. According to the McArthur Foundation announcement, the 36-year-old scientist's work involves "recreating pharmacologically interesting compounds isolated from natural sources de novo in the laboratory through an experimental methodology known as 'total synthesis.'"
