La Jolla Post Office Leaving the Village

The U.S. Postal Service will move its historic Wall Street Post Office to a smaller location.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday plans to move the La Jolla Post office at 1140 Wall St. The Postal Service’s San Diego District identified the 77-year-old building as “a value asset whose potential sale would generate much needed capital for the Postal Service.”

The Postal Service said the La Jolla Main Post Office on the corner of Wall Street and Ivanhoe Avenue would be relocated to a smaller location within 1 mile of the current site. A timeline was not released.

P.O. box numbers will remain the same and hours of operation will remain the same, only the location will differ.

The USPS retained CB Richard Ellis to handle the real estate transaction.

In the announcement, the Postal Service cited the continued economic recession and decrease in mail volume over the past several years as adversely affecting the Postal Service’s revenue. It said that at the conclusion of its 2011 fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, 2011, the Postal Service reported a net loss of $5.1 billion.
