La Jolla Merchants Scare Up Treats for Halloween 'Pillage the Village'

The annual event features a costume contest and food drive.

It wouldn't be Halloween in La Jolla without young ghouls and goblins haunting the streets for the annual Pillage the Village.

The event features trick-or-treating with local merchants, a costume contest and a food drive. Pillage the Village is sponsored by the La Jolla Merchants Association, REBA: The La Jolla Real Estate Brokers Association, and the La Jolla Kiwanis Club.

Your costumed cuties are invited to pillage for treats from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 31 in La Jolla Village. Participating merchants will have orange and black balloons at their doors to let you know they're part of the fun.

Keep your eye out for "witches" casting their spells on the crowd and selecting 20 of their favorite little pillagers for costume prizes. Awards will be presented at 4:30 p.m.

The event also features a four-day food drive to benefit the San Diego Food Bank. Nonperishable food items such as canned goods, and packaged foods such as pasta, rice, crackers, and cereal can be donated in exchange for a commemorative trick-or-treat bag.

Food drive donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28-31 at the REBA office, 908 Kline St., or C&H Photo, 7442 Girard Ave. A food donation is not required to participate in Pillage the Village. And you don't need to participate in Pillage the Village to donate food!
