A boat crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station San Diego conducted a medevac for an injured crewman aboard a container ship off the coast of San Diego Saturday morning.
The 52-year-old Filipino man severely injured his hand during a drill aboard the Caroline Maersk and was transported to San Diego for medical care.
The ship's crew contacted the Coast Guard Friday evening requesting a medevac for the crewman. A Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended that the man receive medical treatment ashore.
At the time of the initial call, the ship was approximately 340 miles southwest of San Diego and altered course toward San Diego to reduce the distance.
A 45-foot Response Boat from Station San Diego met the ship five miles off the coast Saturday morning and transported the injured man to San Diego, where he was transferred to emergency medical personnel for further treatment at approximately 6:30 a.m.
