Baby Seagulls at The Cove

Protected and fed by two adult gulls, the two babies have lived their entire lives on the ledge above the La Jolla Cove beach.

Two large baby Great Black Backed Seagulls, not yet old enough to fly, were seen Thursday on a ledge overlooking the beach at La Jolla Cove.

A pair of adult gulls, postured dominantly towards any beach-goers who came too close to the young, have spent their entire lives cliffside.

"It's our own little Galapagos," said Joe Tuipala, an Ocean Beach native. "The mom just regurgitated a mackerel for the young."

Joe's 4-year-old son Reef Tuipala had never seen baby gulls before, an experience that he described as "awesome."

Most seagulls travel south to Baja, Mexico to nest and raise their young.

Cove lifeguards, who wished not to be identified, said that the two seagulls have been returning to the cove every year to nest and raise their young.

A lifeguard said that luckily no humans have interfered with the gull family, and recommended that beach-goers keep their distance.
