UNION BANK, KPBS HONOR TWO SAN DIEGO WOMEN AS LOCAL HEROES IN CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 19, 2014) – In celebration of Women’s History Month and as part of its ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and responsible banking, Union Bank, N.A., has partnered with KPBS to honor two exceptional women as local heroes.  The 2014 Women’s History Month honorees are: M. Eloise Battle, a lifelong activist who has devoted her time and passion advocating for open space and parks in San Diego, and Vickie E. Turner, Esq., a partner at Wilson Turner Kosmo LLP and a champion and mentor for women and youth.

They were recognized in March at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

Since 1998, KPBS and Union Bank have collaborated on the Local Heroes program and recognized more than 190 honorees.  The program pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large.  The 2014 Women’s History Month honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in today’s changing world.

In addition to the Women’s History Month local heroes, honorees were also identified during Black History Month  (February) and will also be recognized during Jewish American Heritage Month (May); Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May); LGBT Pride Month (June); Hispanic Heritage Month (September/October); Disability Awareness Month (October); and American Indian Heritage Month (November).

The 2014 honorees for Women’s History Month are: 

 M. Eloise Battle is an activist devoted to advocating for open space and parks in San Diego.  Ms. Battle was instrumental in establishing the Tecolote Canyon Park Assessment and served as chair of the Tecolote Canyon Citizens Advisory Committee (TCCAC).  She chaired “Baskets and Botany,” an annual educational event for youth, which celebrates the environment and the Kumeyaay connection in Tecolote Canyon.  Ms. Battle’s passion for conservation, preservation and restoration continues through her involvement in educational programs for school children. She was the recipient of the Norma J. Sullivan Conservation Award from the San Diego Chapter of the Audubon Society.  In 2012, a Nature Center classroom was dedicated in her honor.

Vickie E. Turner, Esq., is a partner at Wilson Turner Kosmo LLP and a champion for women and youth.  The guidance Ms. Turner received throughout her career inspired her to pay it forward—through mentoring, serving on boards, and by setting up a family foundation, the Turner Dream Foundation.  She has also been involved with many organizations, including the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, Pathways 2 College and the Lawyers Club of San Diego, an organization that seeks to advance the status of women in law and society.  Ms. Turner has received numerous awards, including Women Who Mean Business, Outstanding Trial Lawyer, and she was also selected as one of California's Top Women Litigators in 2005 by the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
