Bestselling Author Luanne Rice Brings Book Themes to Life at Warwick's Books in La Jolla

Luanne Rice continued her book tour for THE LEMON ORCHARD at Warwick’s Books in La Jolla, Calif. on July 8, 2014.

Like the main character in THE LEMON ORCHARD, Luanne moved to Malibu, Calif. after a lifetime on the East Coast, and she drew on her personal experiences in the region when writing the novel. Armando, an undocumented worker from Mexico who worked on her home, had an incredibly powerful story of determination and survival against all odds and inspired the character of Roberto in THE LEMON ORCHARD. Armando and his cousin nearly died in the desert heat while crossing into the U.S., an all-too-common occurrence that prompted Luanne to volunteer with the Water Station in the Southern California desert.

The Water Station team – who often save lives by placing water in the desert where migrants cross the border, and would otherwise die from dehydration or heat – attended the book event.
