Peripheral Neuropathy

According to the Neuropathy Association, peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a common disorder that affects more than 20 million Americans. There are 3 types of peripheral nerves- motor, sensory and autonomic. These nerves are responsible for transmitting messages to and from the spinal cord to muscles then back to the brain. Many cases of PN can not be cured, however early diagnosis can help control progression and the effects on daily living. Physical therapy (PT) can be beneficial in treating the following symptoms of PN; numbness, pain, gait and balance deficits, hypersensitivity, joint stiffness, endurance and mobility impairments and more. The physical therapists at Ability Rehab are specialized in treating PN and other neurological conditions. Your therapist will perform a full evaluation, assessing gait, mobility, pain, proprioception, range of motion, and flexibility to create an individualized treatment plan. Treatment may include, but is not limited to: manual therapy, gait and balance training, spinal mobilizations, ultrasound, e-stim and a recommended home exercise program. If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms, contact your neurologist to find out if PT is right for you.
