A Saturday morning surf event at proved that dedicated volunteers and good waves can really help a group of eager individuals with spinal cord injuries push the boundary of possibilities.
They Will Surf Again, an adaptive surf event, inspires individuals with SCI to get active and enjoy some waves with the help of volunteers. Some of the participants have not surfed since their injury, some are first time surfers and some surf all the time despite their varying mobility.
Surfers were assisted at all times. Volunteers assisted surfers from the sand, onto the board, pushed them into waves and grabbed them at the end of their ride.
More than 100 volunteers filled the beach to assist with everything from serving breakfast to assisting in the water. Actor Jason Lewis, best known as Samantha's boyfriend Smith Jarrod on Sex and the City, was in attendance as a volunteer.
This is the eighth of nine They Will Surf Again events across the U.S. in 2011. The final session will be at Wrightsville Beach, NC, on Oct. 1.
They Will Surf Again is a no-cost program underwritten by Life Rolls On and additional sponsors.
