'The Atlantic Meets the Pacific' Event Kicks Off Sunday at UCSD

The 3-day event highlights technologies in science, energy, health and media.

The  annual "The Atlantic Meets the Pacific" event hosted by the Atlantic magazine and UC San Diego will begin its three-day run Sunday to highlight breakthrough technologies in science, energy, health and media.

Throughout the event, interviews and panel discussions will be held at venues on and around the UC San Diego campus and tours will be given at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the university's Calit2 digital media laboratory and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, according to event organizers.

"The partnership is a perfect fit," said Mary Walshok, the university's associate vice chancellor of public programs and dean of extension. "UC San Diego is one of the nation's most accomplished research universities, renowned for its collaborative, diverse and cross-disciplinary energy that transcends traditional boundaries in science, arts and the humanities. Our award-winning scholars are experts at the forefront of their fields with an impressive track record for achieving scientific, medical and technological breakthroughs."

Panelists for the event include Chris Cox, vice president at Facebook; Stacey Snider, CEO of DreamWorks Studios; V.S. Ramachandran, author of "The Tell-Tale Brain;" and James Bennet, the Atlantic's editor-in-chief.

"Through its history, the Atlantic has drawn together provocative, original thinkers to debate key issues shaping our world, and we're excited to once again partner with UC San Diego in this annual exploration of cutting-edge ideas," said Elizabeth Baker Keffer, president of AtlanticLIVE and vice president of the Atlantic.

Tickets are available through the event's website at atlanticmeetspacific.com. General admission for the full conference, which includes access to all main-stage programming, a choice of lab tours and meals is $795. A ticket to Sunday's events at the Museum of Contemporary Art costs $25 and does not include the evening reception.
